Exploring the U.S. Air Force Academy: A Complete Guide for Visitors to Colorado Springs

October 22, 2024 By Dan Hayes

If you have ever been to Colorado Springs, you have likely heard about the U.S. Air Force Academy. Nestled at the foot of the Rocky Mountains, just north of the city, the Academy spans 18,500 acres of breathtaking natural beauty and world-class facilities. It is not only a premier military institution but also one of the most visited attractions in Colorado.

Getting There: The Academy is located just off I-25, about 15 miles north of downtown Colorado Springs. The North Gate entrance is the main visitor entrance. There is no admission fee to visit the Visitor Center or the Cadet Chapel.

The Cadet Chapel: The iconic Cadet Chapel is one of the most photographed buildings in Colorado. Its 17 spires rise 150 feet into the sky and are visible from miles away. The chapel houses separate worship spaces for Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, Buddhist, and other faith traditions.

The Visitor Center: The Barry Goldwater Visitor Center offers exhibits on the history and mission of the Air Force Academy, cadet life, and the history of the U.S. Air Force. It is a great starting point for your visit.

Why This Matters for Homebuyers: If you are considering relocating to Colorado Springs, proximity to the Air Force Academy is a significant quality-of-life factor. The surrounding neighborhoods offer excellent schools, outdoor recreation, and a strong sense of community.
